History

For the last 35 years, J.D. Hair & Associates has used our horizontal directional drilling (HDD) expertise to help owners, contractors and design firms achieve their infrastructure construction goals. Recognized as an industry leader and pioneer in HDD design, our team works on some of the most challenging HDD projects ever completed. J.D. Hair & Associates developed many of the HDD guidelines still used today. Today, our team is taking the same approach of our comprehensive field knowledge, contractor understanding and holistic approach, and has expanded our services to other trenchless engineering solutions.

2021

J.D. Hair & Associates becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Michels Trenchless Inc. J.D. Hair & Associates continues to operate as a pioneer in HDD but evolves into a Trenchless Solutions Firm.

2018

John Hair retires. A group of employees purchase the firm and continue to operate with the same business philosophy.

2012-2014

J.D. Hair & Associates is responsible for designing and construction monitoring 22 HDDs on the Flanagan South Pipeline. The project includes a 9,000-foot crossing of the Mississippi River, believed to be the longest 36-inch HDD crossing completed.

2004

J.D. Hair & Associates was responsible for the geotechnical investigation, feasibility analysis, detailed design and consultation during the Duke Energy Hubline project. This highly innovative 30-inch offshore pipeline system included four drilled crossings, which were state-of-the-art in length and required offshore operations. The project was recognized as the 2004 Trenchless Technology Project of the Year for New Installation.

1996-1999

J.D. Hair & Associates is the design consultant on a sizeable multi-design team for an 886-mile pipe extending through Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The project involves field reconnaissance at more than 50 potential HDD crossings.

1993

J.D. Hair & Associates hires its first associate engineer. Over the next 15 years, the firm slowly grows to about a dozen employees.

1992

J.D. Hair & Associates is the design consultant on a challenging crossing of the Hudson River. The HDD is a 16-inch, 4,500-foot crossing for a steel pipeline delivering natural gas. The crossing is recognized in 1993 as an Outstanding Engineering Achievement by the New York State Society of Professional Engineers.

1987

J.D. Hair & Associates is founded by John Hair to provide specialized engineering services to install pipelines and utilities by HDD. John recognizes a need for consulting engineers to go between utility owners and HDD contractors to provide HDD design and project management services.
